Easter in Ukraine

From: Olenka

Subject: Easter in Ukraine

Hi, Jane!
Thank you very much for your letter. It was very interesting for me to read about Easter traditions in your country.
In Ukraine Easter is one of the most important holidays for many people. Traditional Easter egg is called pysanka - it’s a symbol of this holiday. Palm Sunday, the week before Easter, is known in my country as Willow Sunday. People bring home willow branches. They bless them in the church. This week all the people prepare for Easter. The Thursday before Easter is called Clean Thursday. The house must be clean on this day. Good Friday is the day when the women of the family bake “paska”, Ukrainian Easter bread. On Saturday children paint Easter eggs to add to the Easter basket. It also includes pysanka, salt, sausage, cheese, butter and ham.
In the evening people go to church for the Easter mass, which lasts all night. Easter Sunday is a day of singing songs and eating. Young girls dance and sing about nature and spring. People exchange pysanky.
All in all, Easter is a merry holiday in Ukraine. I’ll send you some pictures next time!
Best wishes

Olenka

Traditions of St.Patrick's Day:Green in 30 seconds:

Amazing timelapse of how Chicago River is turned emerald for St Patrick's Day
The Chicago River has been turned green in honour of St Patrick's Day for more than 50 years. Tradition started from the city's efforts to detect illegal sewage dumping. Plumbers put fluorescein dye in the river which turned bright green if toxic sludge was detected
Now a harmless orange vegetable dye is used to get the desired green hue

Origin of the holiday

While not the first to bring christianity to Ireland, it is Patrick who is said to have encountered the Druids at Tara and abolished their pagan rites. The story holds that he converted the warrior chiefs and princes, baptizing them and thousands of their subjects in the “Holy Wells” that still bear this name.
There are several accounts of Saint Patrick’s death. One says that Patrick died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, on March 17, 460 A.D. His jawbone was preserved in a silver shrine and was often requested in times of childbirth, epileptic fits, and as a preservative against the “evil eye.” Another account says that St. Patrick ended his days at Glastonbury, England and was buried there. The Chapel of St. Patrick still exists as part of Glastonbury Abbey. Today, many Catholic places of worship all around the world are named after St. Patrick, including cathedrals in New York and Dublin city
A toast for St Patrick’s Day, “May the roof above us never fall in, and may we friends beneath it never fall out.”
